Behind the Scenes: BRICK

We had the distinct pleasure of being invited with one of our clients who had booked this venue for an exclusive Open House at BRICK in Liberty Station.

For a nontraditional venue, it is awesome. It has an open expansive ceiling and is right next to the famous Liberty Station Market in Point Loma. (Think of the Seattle Public Market and place it in beautiful San Diego…)

Wedding Planner Tips: Engagement Shoot

Engagement Shoot: Tips from a Wedding Planner

Bring multiple outfits/looks

  • Consider different types of clothing and shoes
  • You don’t have to stick to one look or color palette. Change it up!
  • Keep your location in mind (wearing snow boots and jackets to a beach shoot might not be the best idea, and vice versa.)

Props are great!

  • Signs
  • Blankets
  • Things that represent you as a couple (matching jerseys, cute hats, etc.)
  • Don’t forget your RING(S)!

Children and Pets Welcome

  • If you have children or pets (fur babies), they make great additions to engagement shoots!
  • There is nothing like including your family in a photo that you may want framed later!

Time of day/lighting is key!

  • If you are using an outdoor location, work with your photographer to determine the best time of day to get the look you’re going for.
    • If you are shooting at noon, you will have shadows across your brows, where as if you shoot early or later the lighting will be more even!
  • If you are using an indoor location, make sure the there is proper lighting or that your photographer can provide the proper equipment. It makes all the difference!

Consider multiple locations

  • You are not stuck using a single location for your shoot. Wander around where you are and get comfortable.
  • If you are not sold on a location, change it!
  • Brainstorm with your photographer and fiance to determine the best place (or places!) that represent you and will allow you to get the look you’re going for.
  • You don’t need a perfect location, just one that will look good as a backdrop for your photo. (Don’t worry if there is an unsightly area somewhere near you… use what you have available!)

Get inspired by others

  • If you absolutely love (or absolutely HATE) a certain pose, background, color filter, etc., let your photographer know in advance. It will help them get a better feel for your tastes and preferences.
  • Pinterest is a wonderful place to get ideas. BUT, I recommend narrowing down to about 10-15 poses that you love! Any more than that can be overwhelming. Plus, your photographer will likely have plenty of great ideas.

Be candid

  • Don’t be afraid to be silly and really interact with your partner. Some of the best photos aren’t staged but captured while two people are just being themselves.
  • Getting used to being photographed without being posed will help on your big day! Being in front of a camera ALL DAY is hard. But taking some time to experience it before the wedding will help you and your partner to be less stiff and more comfortable.

Pro Tip: Try out a makeup or hairstyle you’re considering for the wedding. This is the perfect time to see how it will photograph and if you really like how it turns out!

Disclaimer: I am not a photographer… but I am married to one, so there’s that.

Are Engagement Shoots Necessary?

Are Engagement Shoots Necessary?

I often get asked if engagement photos are worth the time, money and effort they require… My response: 100% YES!

Engagement photos can be both a fun and intimate experience for you and your fiance. They allow you to get used to interacting on camera before your big day; but more importantly, you get used to working with a photographer ahead of time! (There is nothing worse or more awkward than stiff wedding photos… As nervous as you are on that day, your photos will last forever, so this is a great first step!)

If possible, you can even hire the same photographer for your wedding as your engagement shoots to keep that comfort level that you’ve established.

In addition, engagement photos have numerous uses. The are typically taken for use with the “Save the Dates” or for Wedding invitations. However, they make great holiday gifts for parents or close relatives. We used our engagement photos to make framed art for our apartment by printing the photos on a canvas and mounting them!

Keep an eye out for Shutterfly offers (get a free photobook with this link!) and you can make a great guest book for your wedding day. (You don’t necessarily need design skill either as many of the options are beautiful templates that you can just drag and drop in!)

So, do yourself a favor and take them time to get them done properly, rather than just using the iPhone photo you took of your engagement ring. You won’t regret it! (But you might regret NOT doing it!)

Wedding DIY: Walnut Pesto

Wedding-DIY-Home-Made-Pesto-ImageWeddings can become ULTRA expensive fairly quickly if you aren’t careful. One way to cut wedding cost is to prepare some (or all!) of the food yourself.

If you are at a park or a venue that doesn’t have a required catering contract, you are free to bring h’ordeurves or appetizers without contracting a vendor.

One amazingly flavorful and cost effective sauce is a walnut and spinach pesto. Traditionally, pesto is done with pine nuts and basil, which are both costly options.
Substitute the walnuts for pine nuts, spinach for basil and mozzarella for Parmesan and you are in business for a much lower cost per serving! (Almost 50% less!)

Sample menu items include:
– Pesto Dipping Sauce for Pita Chips
– Pesto Crustini’s
– Sundried Tomato and Pesto Panini’s
– Pesto Pasta with sliced Bell Peppers
– Chicken Pesto Won-ton Bites

The key to a successful finger food is leaving a lasting, flavorful bite, and pesto certainly does that!

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup Parsley
  • 1/4 cup Basil
  • 2 cups Spinach
  • 1/4 cup Olive Oil
  • 1/2 cup Walnuts
  • 1/2 cup Mozzarella
  • 3 Garlic Cloves
  • Lemon Juice
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Mix all in a blender, food processor, Nutribullet

Store in a refrigerator and mix together as needed. Serves 6-8 oz per serving
